Achievements and future plans in Kazakhmys Smelting LLP

First of all, the current state of the industrial safety and labor protection system was determined, as a result of which graphic models and maps of each system process were compiled. Further, our company determined the goals, on the basis of which a new model of the industrial safety and labor protection system was developed and implemented. This model included initiatives to reduce document flow, introduce thematic inspections for dangerous types of accidents, switch to a risk-based approach, and proactive measures in the field of labor protection, which are still working successfully to this day. An important role in improving the industrial safety and labor protection system of our company was played by the international company DuPont Sustainable Solutions. As a result of our cooperation, an effective risk management system has been implemented at the enterprises. The joint Injury Reduction and Risk Management Program has been operating since 2018 and has already brought significant results. For example, at the moment, 2349 fatal risks have been identified for all work operations, technical and organizational measures have been developed and are being implemented to reduce such risks. We also expect that the methods and tools of the Program, as well as the skills that our employees gained during the training on the Program, can positively affect the level of personnel’s commitment to systematic work on risk management and improving the safety culture. It is necessary to understand that the work on preventing risks in the workplace, upgrading equipment and automating technological processes is only the tip of the iceberg of the industrial safety and labor protection system. Thus, according to the analysis of the causes of accidents, only 25% of them arise due to inappropriate working conditions, while the remaining 75% of cases are personnel behavior, human errors during operations. Concern for the health of employees is an important part of our company's policy. In this regard, a set of measures is also provided to prevent human errors. The system of regulatory documents has been completely revised – namely, maps of work execution processes have been developed, which contain step-by-step and detailed actions of employees for each operation. At the moment, a list of dangerous operations has been defined, for which personnel are monitored in order to exclude injuries. These operations were selected based on an assessment of risks, the frequency of the repeatability of the operation, as well as the level of established control by management. Further, depending on the results obtained, measures will be taken to modernize the process, change the rules of operation, and establish additional control. Also, as part of a pilot project, together with KazSystem Ltd, smart video surveillance cameras with safety deviations and occupational safety analysis are being introduced at workplaces. Artificial intelligence and digital solutions have long been proven effective in industrial safety. At the moment, Kazakhmys Holding LLP has automated accounting and analytics for violations identified by government bodies, as well as violations identified by production and internal control. Thus, the implementation of a video surveillance project is another step towards the active use of digital technologies. The life of employees is not left without attention. It significantly affects the concentration of employees in the process of performing work, the perception of requirements for labor protection and industrial safety. In this regard, we try to encourage employees who have proved themselves as professionals – employees are awarded annually in three categories "Reliability", "Competence" and "Commitment", they are also given season tickets to sports and recreation complexes, and employees of the risk group are paid for courses in sanatorium and preventive complexes. Together with trade unions and the youth Union, many competitions are also held – for example, the annual competitions dedicated to the world day of labor protection. The cultural life of the collective is not left without attention: the theater from among the employees of "Kazakhmys Smelting" has already staged three performances "Body-o-keepers", "Zhanna... zhylynyzben!" and "Waltz of the rain". We are confident that a set of such solutions will help to unite the team, increase the level of involvement and commitment of employees to the company's principles, thereby ensuring the reduction of injuries and the formation of a high safety culture in the long term.
