As part of our activities, we consistently implement initiatives aimed at reducing our environmental footprint, supporting regional development, and introducing international management standards. Our priority is the protection of the environment in the regions where we operate.
At the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and at the One Water Summit international platform, we presented one of our key environmental initiatives — the company’s decision to allocate USD 5 million to preserve the ecosystem of Lake Balkhash. We view this step not as a one-time investment or an act of charity, but as a conscious commitment and responsibility for the country’s natural heritage and a contribution to future generations.
At this stage, Kazakhmys Corporation LLP is considering joining the development of a Master Plan for the preservation and protection of Lake Balkhash in cooperation with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the French Bureau of Geological and Mining Research (BRGM).
In line with Kazakhstan’s Strategy for Carbon Neutrality by 2060 and the Concept for Transition to a Green Economy, Kazakhmys is initiating projects in the field of renewable energy. Thus, Kazakhmys Corporation LLP and Kazakhmys Smelting LLP signed direct long-term agreements with renewable energy producers of KAZ GREEN ENERGY LLP. The Group’s consumption of renewable energy in 2024 amounted to 276 million kWh, which is three times higher than in 2023.
To manage our real impact on the climate and ensure the completeness of carbon accounting, we calculated indirect greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 2) for the first time.
An integral part of our work is the rational management of water resources. In 2024, the modernization of water circulation systems continued at our processing plants, which enabled us to reduce fresh water withdrawal and increase recycling volumes.
We firmly believe that science and collaboration with research centers form the foundation for technological breakthroughs. In partnership with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a scientific and innovation hackathon was held for the first time in the country from 1 to 3 July 2024. This event became a unique platform for interaction among the scientific community, research institutes, and industrial enterprises in search of solutions in ecology, digitalization, lean manufacturing, and other fields.
Yet the main driving force behind all these initiatives — and our greatest value — remains our people: our employees, their families, and the residents of the regions where we operate. Supporting the well-being and development of these territories is not merely part of our strategy; it is our key responsibility and the foundation of the company’s long-term sustainability.
In 2024, under the memorandum with the Akimat of Ulytau Region, Kazakhmys allocated more than 15.5 billion tenge for the implementation of 30 significant projects — from the construction of a sports complex, kindergarten, and riverside promenade to the renovation of public spaces and development of infrastructure.
To implement social initiatives, Kazakhmys Corporation LLP actively cooperates with key partner organizations, foundations, and NGOs that carry out critical projects in education, culture, sports, social support, and regional development.
Together with the public foundation The Ulytau Educational Foundation, a teacher transformation project is being implemented for educators in Ulytau, Shu, and Karaganda. This initiative covers 85 schools in the company’s regions of presence, creating conditions for improving the quality of education in the area.
With the support of the Qazaqstan Halqyna Foundation, a number of major initiatives have been implemented in the development of education, the opening of centers for children with special needs, and the construction of sports facilities. Additionally, a project for establishing modern hub schools is being carried out.
Ulytau Sport Qory ensures stable funding for the Ulytau football club and implements initiatives in chess development, as well as supporting environmental campaigns and sports tournaments.
Thus, Kazakhmys Corporation LLP is not only implementing its own programs but also building a broad partnership network to enhance the effectiveness of social initiatives in the key regions where it operates.
