Kazakhmys strengthens industrial safety: digitalization, investment and a new strategic approach

At a meeting of the Government of Kazakhstan, Nurakhmet Nuriev, Chairman of the Management Board of Kazakhmys Corporation LLP, reported on the measures being implemented to improve occupational safety and reduce workplace injuries across the company’s operations.

Digital Solutions at the Core of the New Safety Strategy

A key focus of the corporation’s updated safety strategy is the digitalization of risk management systems. Since 2021, Kazakhmys has introduced personnel and equipment positioning systems across its mines and processing sites. These technologies enable real-time tracking of employees and machinery, ensuring rapid response to any emergency situations.

In 2022, a process monitoring system was launched at the Balkhash Concentrator and by 2025, the company began pilot testing a barrier-based injury prevention system and the integrated Kazakhmys SuperAPP platform designed to enhance working conditions through the digitalization of HR processes.

Additional digital projects include the automation of personal protective equipment (PPE) and workwear accounting, the introduction of an electronic system for medical examinations at high-risk facilities, and the deployment of a Comprehensive Occupational Safety Management Platform.

25% Reduction in Injury Rate - A Result of Systematic Efforts

Over the past three years, Kazakhmys has achieved a 25% reduction in workplace injuries. Despite a single incident at the Zhomart mine in 2025 - the first gas explosion since 2014 the overall safety situation remains stable. The key causes of incidents, including rock falls and equipment collisions, are under reinforced monitoring and control.

The corporation continues to actively invest in occupational safety, allocating KZT 24 bln over the past three years and planning an additional KZT 26 bln for 2025. These investments are directed not only toward technical improvements but also toward fostering a safety-oriented culture, employee training, and the implementation of digital technologies.

Corporate Culture and Risk Management as Strategic Priorities

In 2025, Kazakhmys initiated a comprehensive revision of its industrial safety strategy, structured around five core pillars:

1. Development of a proactive safety culture;

2. Transformation of occupational safety management approaches;

3. Digitalization of safety processes;

4. Implementation of a risk-based, barrier-model management system;

5. Strengthening of occupational health systems.

The corporation has identified 15 key operational risks and reinforced internal and production control mechanisms. In 2025 alone, technical audits revealed 2,378 violations, leading to the suspension of 64 processes until full remediation.

Accountability at Every Level

Within the corporation, a KPI-based occupational safety system has been introduced for top management. Subcontractor organizations, which contribute a significant portion of total injury statistics are now also subject to stricter safety compliance requirements.

In addition, a violation tracking system has been implemented across production sites, and each serious incident is reviewed by production safety councils, where those responsible face individual accountability.

Kazakhmys is implementing a comprehensive approach to enhancing industrial safety, from targeted investments and digital transformation to cultivating a new culture of occupational protection. For the company, this represents not a reactive response to isolated incidents, but a systematic shift toward a preventive, risk-based model, where safety becomes an integral part of its corporate identity.
