Academician Sultanbek Kozhakhmetov celebrates his 90th anniversary
This year marks two remarkable milestones for the distinguished Kazakh scholar - his 90th birthday and 67 years of uninterrupted scientific activity.
Sultanbek Myrzakhmetovich has devoted his life to metallurgy and is the author of groundbreaking discoveries that transformed Kazakhstan’s industrial landscape. His research not only filled the pages of scientific publications but also found wide practical application - technologies developed under his guidance continue to operate successfully both in Kazakhstan and abroad.
In 1974, under his leadership, the Irtysh Copper Smelting Plant implemented the oxygen–air cyclonic electrothermal process method - a unique process for smelting complex copper-zinc raw materials. In 1985, the Balkhash Metallurgical Plant mastered the smelting of copper concentrates in a liquid bath furnace, known as the Vanyukov furnace - a true technological breakthrough that remains in operation to this day.
Beyond his scientific contributions, Sultanbek Kozhakhmetov held key positions within the Academy of Sciences, serving as Deputy Director of the Institute of Metallurgy and Ore Beneficiation, Vice President of the Academy and later as the Institute’s Director. His scientific school laid a solid foundation for entire generations of researchers and professionals.
