First Open-Heart Surgery performed in the Heart of Kazakhstan
For the first time in the history of Ulytau Region, an open-heart surgery (coronary artery bypass grafting) was successfully performed at Zhezkazgan Medical Center LLP, a facility owned by Kazakhmys Corporation LLP. This landmark event marks a new chapter in the region’s healthcare development, allowing residents to receive high-tech cardiac surgical care locally, without the need to travel to major cities.
The project aligns with the message of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the development of the national healthcare system and is primarily aimed at improving the well-being of people. The initiative was implemented by Orkendeu Assistance LLP, with financial support from Kazakhmys Corporation, as part of a comprehensive regional cardiology program in Ulytau Region. To enable such complex surgical procedures, Zhezkazgan Medical Center underwent a complete modernization of its intensive care unit and acquired new medical equipment worth KZT 650 mln.
«All these efforts are part of a broader program aimed at developing cardiac care in the region. The program covers prevention, early diagnosis and high-tech surgical interventions, with the ultimate goal of protecting the health and lives of Ulytau residents»,- said Aigul Boranbayeva, Director of Orkendeu Assistance LLP.
The surgeries were conducted at Zhezkazgan Medical Center, the largest private healthcare institution in Ulytau Region, managed by Orkendeu Assistance LLP and ranked among the top ten medical centers in Kazakhstan. Two residents of Zhezkazgan: a 60-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man underwent surgery performed by Dr. Yuriy Pya, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, Chairman of the National Research Cardiac Surgery Center and Chief Visiting Cardiac Surgeon of the Ministry of Health. Dr. Pya is a leading national expert and has long been recognized internationally for his contribution to the cardiac surgery.
«This is a major step forward for the region’s healthcare system. Until now, all patients requiring coronary bypass surgery had to travel to Astana or other regional centers. This initiative will allow us to further develop cardiac surgery in Ulytau and eventually provide comprehensive treatment locally. Our cooperation with UMC will continue, colleagues from Astana plan to visit Zhezkazgan for surgeries and to train our specialists»,-noted Dauren Amankulov, Director of Zhezkazgan Medical Center LLP.
The center is equipped with modern infrastructure, high-precision medical technologies and highly qualified personnel. It is the only facility in Ulytau Region holding the highest category of National Accreditation and authorization to provide high-tech medical care (HTMC).
Following the successful operations, Dr. Yuriy Pya emphasized the importance of developing regional cardiac surgery services through similar initiatives.
«Geographically, Zhezkazgan and Ulytau region itself lie at the very heart of Kazakhstan. Historically and strategically, this area holds immense significance. With over 220,000 residents, advancing cardiology and cardiac surgery here is vital. The Zhezkazgan Medical Center, built 25 years ago, operates in full compliance with international medical standards. At our Heart Center, we work by one principle - the patient always comes first. It is essential to bring medicine closer to people, not the other way around. The closer high-quality medical care is to the patient, the stronger and more developed Kazakhstan will be»,- said Dr. Yuriy Pya.
The Chief Visiting Cardiac Surgeon of the Ministry of Health added that his team will continue to visit Ulytau to conduct surgeries and train local professionals. He emphasized that the mission of the National Research Cardiac Surgery Center is to extend its methodologies and technologies beyond the capital, supporting the advancement of healthcare throughout the country.
