On the resumption of operations at the Zhomart Mine: A message from Nurakhmet Nuriev to the employees of Kazakhmys Corporation LLP

On February 17, 2025, a tragedy occurred at the Zhomart Mine. We lost our colleagues — our friends and partners in work. This is an irreparable loss, felt deeply not only by the mine’s team but by the entire Kazakhmys family.

On behalf of Kazakhmys Corporation and personally, I express my deepest and most sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of those who perished. We share your pain. This difficult event has reminded us all of how fragile the line is between everyday work and tragedy, especially in high-risk production environments.

We do not shirk responsibility. Ensuring the safety of every employee is our direct duty and moral obligation. We must learn from what happened and do everything in our power to ensure that such an incident never happens again.

From the very first days after the accident, we launched a comprehensive and systematic program aimed at eliminating the consequences of the incident and creating the conditions for the safe resumption of operations. This work relies on scientific expertise, the experience of leading specialists and the united efforts of all who care.

Leading scientific and engineering organizations were engaged in the process. A series of in-depth studies were conducted, new monitoring and control systems were introduced and technical solutions were developed and approved by state supervisory authorities. Thanks to the collective, meticulous efforts of research institutes, technical experts and our company’s employees, the Zhomart Mine has officially been granted permission to resume mining operations. This decision was made following a thorough assessment of mine conditions, safety levels and personnel readiness.

However, I want to emphasize one crucial point: no production plan is worth a human life. If there is even the slightest doubt about safety, work must be immediately suspended, the risk must be reported and all efforts must be focused on its elimination. Every employee has the right-and the duty-to speak up.

The Senim feedback system (formerly SpeakUp) continues to operate, enabling everyone to voice concerns openly. Our position remains unchanged: a risk identified must be a risk resolved-without delay.

Only through deep respect for life, for one another and for our profession can we move forward together. I express my sincere gratitude to every employee of our company for your resilience, integrity and commitment to our shared values. It is thanks to your dedication that we have overcome these challenges together, and as of June 16, operations at the Zhomart Mine have officially resumed - safely and with care for every person involved.

With respect,

Nurakhmet Nuriev
