The Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Kazakhmys Corporation LLP have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation to establish a new innovative university Ulytau University in Ulytau region. The document was signed by Minister Sayasat Nurbek and Nurakhmet Nuriyev, Chairman of the Management Board of Kazakhmys.

The project aims to develop the region’s scientific and educational infrastructure, train highly qualified personnel for the mining and metallurgical sector and create a modern educational ecosystem. The new university will serve as a platform where education, science and industry are integrated into a single model, enhancing both the economic and social potential of the Ulytau region.

Ulytau University plans to collaborate with the Colorado School of Mines (USA) and Satbayev University (Kazakhstan). Students will have access to programs aligned with international standards and gain exposure to advanced research and cutting-edge technologies. Academic activities are scheduled to commence in the next academic year.

The university’s infrastructure will include an academic building, a dormitory accommodating 140–150 students, a sports complex, and a modern R&D center. These facilities will support the development of new technologies, scientific research and projects aimed at improving the efficiency of mineral extraction and processing.

The Ministry of Science and Higher Education will provide methodological and advisory support in launching educational programs. Kazakhmys will fund, organize and co-finance the training programs, including potential access to government grants for students.

Kazakhmys emphasizes that establishing Ulytau University is a strategic step toward strengthening Kazakhstan’s scientific potential and preparing a new generation of engineers and researchers.

The involvement of the Colorado School of Mines, one of the world’s leading mining universities, will enable the implementation of best global practices, joint research initiatives and the preparation of specialists competitive at the international level. For the Ulytau region, the project will drive job creation and attract young talent, while for Kazakhstan, it represents a step toward transitioning from a resource-based economy to a knowledge- and technology-driven economy.
