In response to the tragedy at the Zhomart mine, Kazakhmys promptly organized a coordinated support effort for the families of the deceased workers. An internal task force was established to oversee all necessary measures, including compensation payments, transportation of the bodies, assistance with outstanding loans and employment of family members.

Company executives personally visited the families to offer condolences. Kazakhmys covered all expenses related to the transportation of the bodies to various regions of Kazakhstan. At the request of relatives, the remains of three miners were sent to the Turkestan and Karaganda regions, while the others were laid to rest in Zhezkazgan and Satpayev.

In the near future, meetings will be organized with the families to discuss matters related to employment opportunities and housing improvements.

Insurance payments and protection of employees

Ensuring the safety, health and well-being of employees has always been a top priority for Kazakhmys LLP, which continues to place particular emphasis on these issues.

The corporation has insured its employees with «KM Life» Life insurance JSC under both mandatory and voluntary life and accident insurance programs. This decision was made to provide full financial protection for employees and their families in the event of workplace incidents.

KM Life guarantees the timely and complete fulfillment of all obligations under both types of insurance policies.

Given that all of the deceased miners had dependents, their families will receive survivor’s insurance benefits. The size of these payments depends on the number of dependents and the average monthly salary of the deceased breadwinner. Payments will be made monthly until the children reach 18 years of age, or 23 if they pursue full-time higher education. Additional payments will be provided to unemployed mothers caring for children under 14 years old.

The amount of these insurance payments will be adjusted annually in line with the forecasted inflation rate. Moreover, the families are entitled to a one-time funeral payment of 100 MCI from KM Life.

Obligations under the Collective Agreement

Under the terms of the Collective Agreement, families of the deceased miners have already received a one-time payment of 550 MCI (approximately KZT 2.2 mln) for funeral expenses. They will also receive compensation equivalent to ten annual salaries, ranging from KZT 84 to KZT 141 mln depending on the position and earnings of the deceased.

Further provisions include monthly survivor’s benefits, payment of children’s education costs and other forms of social assistance upon request by family members.

A review of the miners’ outstanding debts to financial institutions is currently underway. The company has contacted the Agency for Regulation and Development of the Financial Market of the Republic of Kazakhstan to clarify all loan obligations of the deceased and their close relatives. So far, debts and mortgages totaling KZT 47.5 mln have been identified in Bank RBK, Kaspi Bank and Halyk Bank, and work is ongoing to fully settle these obligations.

Investigation of the incident

The initial version of the accident suggested a collapse, but after the descent of emergency rescue teams, no structural failures were found.

Operations at the mine have been suspended pending investigation. An analysis is underway to determine the causes of the natural gas release incident. The company is actively cooperating with the Government Commission and investigative authorities and plans to revise its safety standards accordingly.

Over the past three years, Kazakhmys has invested over KZT 87 bln in occupational safety measures, with KZT 38 bln allocated for 2025. The company reiterates that the safety of its employees remains its highest priority.
