How is the preparation for a geological expedition carried out?
25.07.2021
The geological expedition includes a number of activities that involve a large number of specialists. In advance of the departure of the column of equipment with personnel, topographical work is carried out by geologists at the point of the terrain – the geologist leaves and makes a reconnaissance and makes drilling points on the ground, determines the place for setting up a field camp, taking into account the distance to the water intake and the overall comfortable stay of the entire team. The next important stage is the preparation itself. Preparatory work is being carried out for the transfer of the drilling rig and auxiliary equipment, which begins with a check by engineers and mechanics of the company of the technical readiness of the equipment necessary for the organization of the correct functioning of the working process. The preparation also includes a complete set of fire safety equipment such as powder fire extinguishers, a fire shield complete with designating signs, etc. The column of special equipment is checked for compliance with road safety requirements: the level of oils, the level of diesel fuel, the serviceability of the brake system, parking lights, sound signal, the condition of tires, the presence of road signs, first aid kits, etc. All preparatory work is carried out under the supervision of the responsible managers of the company. In parallel, the working teams are given regular instructions on industrial and fire safety, checking the current health of personnel, issuing personal protective equipment. Drivers are given route sheets, which, in addition to the travel map, include the regulations for observing the speed limit and observing the distances between vehicles in the convoy. It is worth noting that when drawing up the itinerary, the column is instructed to follow the route and go along the existing rolled field roads, trying not to "injure" nature. It is forbidden for a column of equipment to move at night. An Act of readiness is formed with a list of measures taken to prepare and issued inventory for the transfer of equipment in two copies. Upon returning from the site, specialists accept equipment and inventory strictly according to this list. An important role is allocated to the training of specialists: this is the setting of tasks and planned indicators for geological and drilling services. At the same time, if the column is sent to the area without communication, then the senior column is appointed, who is given a satellite communication tool. The specialist rides in an accompanying car and regularly reports on the movement within a specified period of time or when reaching checkpoints. Additionally, for safety reasons, GPS trackers are installed on vehicles. Going on a geological expedition, geologists and drillers will have to face possible unfavorable natural conditions and the costs of shift work. To overcome such difficulties, the company provides all the necessary resources and conditions for the staff. Today, the planned Kazakhmys Barlau geological expedition to the Aidarli site in the East Kazakhstan region has started to perform geological exploration. We wish our colleagues to successfully get to the place and complete all the tasks set!
