World-class geological cluster opens in Zhezkazgan
The first Geological Cluster in Zhezkazgan has officially opened, becoming one of the few world-class centers where all key exploration processes are consolidated on a single site. The modern technical equipment installed at the facility is available in only seven centers worldwide and represents the first project of this scale in Central Asia.
President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has repeatedly emphasized that the development of the geological sector is a crucial driver of the country’s economic growth. He set the task of modernizing management in the mining sector and significantly improving the geological and geophysical knowledge of Kazakhstan’s territory. The creation of the geological cluster aligns with these priorities, providing a practical base for modernizing exploration efforts.
The Geological Cluster is the first facility of its scale in Kazakhstan. By integrating a training center and laboratory complex in one location, it enables accelerated geological data acquisition, which in turn allows for faster decision-making in exploration activities.
Kazakhmys Corporation LLP invested approximately KZT 11 bln in the project, with Kazakh company Tansu Construction serving as the contractor. The cluster has created over 200 jobs and is managed by Kazakhmys Barlau LLP.
The cluster houses the largest core storage facility in Kazakhstan, capable of accommodating 200,000 linear meters of core, forming a national archive of primary geological data. This allows geologists to revisit original data at any time, refine geological models, and reduce risks during exploration.
The laboratory block was developed in partnership with Australian company ALS, a global leader in analytical research, ensuring high-quality geochemical data that meets international standards.
The cluster uses Ancorelog (Germany) automated core scanning technology and AI-based software LithoLens for data processing. These technologies increase the core analysis speed from 60 to 240 linear meters per shift. Combined, they allow rapid creation of geological exploration models and improve the quality of information.
«We are opening infrastructure that makes geology in Kazakhstan more accurate, faster and technologically advanced. On a single site, we have integrated primary data storage, laboratory research, digital analysis and specialist training. This is a new level that will support sustainable development of the country’s mineral resources», - said Nurakhmet Nuriyev, Chairman of the Management Board of Kazakhmys Corporation LLP, at the opening ceremony.
A group of deputies from the Mazhilis of Parliament attended the event. Yedil Zhanbyrshin, Chair of the Committee on Ecology and Environmental Management, noted that Kazakhstan is gradually establishing a strong legislative framework for the creation of geological clusters to support the national economy and improve citizens’ welfare.
In line with the President’s directives, amendments were made to the Subsoil and Subsoil Use Code. This week, the Mazhilis adopted the relevant law in the second reading and forwarded it to the Senate. The amendments aim to enhance the investment attractiveness of the industrial sector, including raising the investment threshold for solid mineral processing agreements, allocating at least 50% of signing bonuses to the state subsoil fund and creating a unified subsoil management platform to ensure transparency, fairness and competition.
The cluster also includes a modern geophysical laboratory developed in partnership with the Colorado School of Mines, equipped with advanced equipment from leading global manufacturers. Commissioning, maintenance, and certified repairs are carried out by Qazaq Geophysics LLP. The laboratory will help develop the country’s research capacity and train specialists in geophysics, instrumentation and robotics.
The cluster’s control center serves as the single management point for Kazakhmys Barlau LLP’s exploration activities, monitoring transportation, drilling rigs and analytics in real time.
Additionally, the cluster includes an educational and methodological block for training and retraining specialists, which will later integrate with the upcoming Ulytau University. Graduates will receive three diplomas, from the university itself, Satbayev University and the world’s first branch of the Colorado School of Mines. A museum has also been built on the cluster site.
The Geological Cluster strengthens Zhezkazgan’s scientific and industrial potential, creates new jobs, expands professional development opportunities and enhances the region’s scientific and technical base. The project continues the legacy of Kanysh Satpayev and contributes to the development of a modern geological school in Kazakhstan.
«For five years, we have been building a high-tech hub that integrates science, education, and production. Our project draws on the experience of leading global geological centers and is implemented in close cooperation with international industry leaders. The cluster allows for the introduction of modern exploration methods, development of new competencies and creation of a professional environment that will define the future of Kazakhstan’s geological sector», - said Galym Nurzhanov, CEO of Kazakhmys Barlau LLP.
The opening of the Kazakhmys Geological Cluster is a landmark event for both the region and the entire industry. The project accelerates the digitalization of geology, enhances research potential and elevates Kazakhstan’s geological exploration to a new level.
