AMM 2025: key highlights and strategic initiatives of Kazakhmys
The 15th International Mining and Metallurgy Congress - Astana Mining & Metallurgy 2025 (AMM) concluded in Astana, bringing together leading representatives of the global mining and metallurgical industry. As one of Kazakhstan’s largest industrial enterprises, Kazakhmys traditionally took part in both the congress and the accompanying exhibition.
One of the central themes of AMM 2025 was the growing global demand for copper and the need to expand its production volumes. According to Zhanibek Baigabelov, General Director of Kazakhmys Smelting LLP, to sustain a 3% annual growth in global GDP, humanity will have to mine and process more copper than it has over the past millennium combined.
«We must continue to invest and expand our production capacities. International cooperation will play a key role in this process, we cannot fully unlock our potential relying solely on domestic investment»,- emphasized Mr. Zh. Baigabelov.
Dmitry Inkin, Technical Director of Qazaq Geophysics, presented innovative airborne geophysical technologies being implemented to enhance exploration efficiency. The company’s portfolio includes three advanced methods, featuring the cutting-edge MTd technology.
«MTd uses UAVs and operates across a broader frequency range, making it a more flexible, versatile, and cost-effective solution. We have everything necessary for comprehensive geophysical research: experience, technology, and a strong team. We are open to collaboration and ready for new challenges»,- said Mr. D. Inkin.
Kazakhstan continues to strengthen its role as a regional leader in sustainable mineral extraction and processing, particularly in materials essential for the energy transition and high-tech industries. Telman Shuriev, Director of External Stakeholder Relations at the Sustainable Development Directorate of Kazakhmys Corporation LLP, spoke about the importance of long-term partnerships:
«Comprehensive cooperation that integrates technological collaboration and infrastructure support opens new horizons. Such partnerships are not merely beneficial, they are essential for sustainable development, especially in logistics, given Kazakhstan’s landlocked position»,- he noted.
The company’s contribution to the social development of single-industry towns was highlighted by Timur Mendebaev, Managing Director for Business Support at Kazakhmys Corporation LLP. Today, Kazakhstan has 90 cities, 20 of which are classified as single-industry towns with a combined population of 1.4 million, producing about 40% of the nation’s industrial output. For Kazakhmys, this primarily includes Balkhash and Satpayev, where the company plays a pivotal socio-economic role that extends far beyond standard cooperation agreements.
«Tax revenue is a key driver of these cities’ budgets. Between 2022 and 2024, Kazakhmys contributed over KZT 38 bln to local budgets, accounting for up to 78% of total municipal tax inflows»,- stated Mr. T. Mendebaev.
In addition to fiscal contributions, Kazakhmys continues to invest in small and medium-sized business development, healthcare, and other sectors across its regions of operation.
During the congress, several major international corporations, including China’s NFC and CNMC expressed interest in Kazakhmys’ upcoming mining projects and exploration initiatives.
For Kazakhmys, participation in AMM 2025 represents more than a reputational engagement. It serves as a practical platform for partnership-building, showcasing project potential, and promoting Kazakhstan’s position as a reliable and sustainable industrial player within the global economy.
