In the middle of the vast expanses of the Central Kazakhstan steppes behind the Karkaraly Hills, the Abyz enterprise of the Kazakhmys Corporation LLP has been conducting its mining activities since 2005. The Abyz gold and polymetallic deposit was identified in 1973 by the Central Geochemical Expedition "Yuzhkazgeologiya" and during further prospecting and evaluation, exploration work until 1993, two main ore sites were identified: East and West. The reserves of the Eastern section, located almost from the daytime surface to a depth of up to 350 meters, were worked out in an open-pit manner (by a quarry 150 meters deep) until 2014, with the transition to an underground mining method in 2015. The complex morphology of the ore bodies of the Eastern section with its characteristic significant variability in configuration and power, as well as the complex geomechanical state of the rock mass and the water content of the exposed horizons until 2020 did not allow reaching the planned indicators of ore and metal extraction. But, with the opening of the Western section and thanks to the hard work of the entire team of the mine and the corporation, in 2020, for the first time in many years, Abyz gave its plan for the issuance of metals: 666 kg for gold, 10239 kg for silver, 5483 tons for copper. - The underground way of working on the Western section allowed us to increase our performance. This year, the mine's ore and metal production capacity has doubled. As a result, the gold reserves of the deposit not only cover their planned indicators, but also exceed the indicators of all the enterprises of the branch for the production of gold and other precious metals," said Zhenisbek Bimaganbetov, director of the Abyz mine. It is worth noting that the main part of the mine's employees consists of local residents of the villages of Abyz and Karkaralinsk and nearby settlements of the Karaganda region. And with the increase in the productivity of the enterprise, jobs have also increased to 330 employees. This year, the corporation has provided an opportunity for more than 70 employees of mining professions to get a decent job.
